Intrapreneurs: Heros of corporate landscape

Thinking in the box

Many large corporates have a culture of being an “organization” instead of being a business company. That means that a big variety of aspects play a role in daily work in such companies like dependencies, hierarchies, internal politics, war of power, processes, guidelines, personalities and the so called corporate culture. Overall the corporate looks financially successful whilst a lot of changes around the world happening day by day and the organization´s people try to keep everything unchanged. Not at least 90% of Fortune500 vanished from the economy within years. Especially large corporates such as organizations have an increased need for smart, creative, energic and capable people with entrepreneurial skills. It is not sustainable to have thousands of people they just execute what’s on the desk. If so than companies wouldn’t have the “thinkers” and the real business developers. corporates need also to have the people who think in the box (inside the company) -instead of relying only on external consultants- to have a relevant entrepreneurial creativity to keep being sustainable for the future.

Intra-preneurs in the driver seat

corporates need people who have entrepreneurial experience combined with organizational culture: intrapreneurs. These people should be capable to balance between entrepreneurial creative spirit to drive innovation, add to success, explore new opportunities, find practical solutions and with organizational culture, processes and guidelines. Intrapreneurs are self-motivated, success oriented and smart warriors with great social skills.

Lack of understanding at HR departments

Most of the time these exotic “intraperneurs” are not explored or identified as such by companies. A lot of HR departments still don’t understand the unique value of having intrapreneurs on board. This has also sometimes to do with several try and fails in their CVs where some HRs can’t find the checklist based strict “oneway” path they’re looking for and underestimate the value of the motivation behind the changes, the brave to test new things and the colorful experiences of these unique diamonds. These guys are sometimes stamped in the profile as not being focused. This is a big mistake. Intrapreneurs are seeking for development and progress. If they recognize there is no progress to expect they try another way to go forward. when we look at VCs and tech companies (whole IT industry) they understood the value and they work with intrapreneurs and nobody questions the “path” of the intrapreneurs. We see that also the software developers have a lot of changes in their career and companies try their best to get and keep them. The large organizations still need to realize the inestimable value add of having such people and need to change the corporate culture accordingly to have an environment where they can survive.

How to keep intrapreneurs

Honestly, intrapreneurs are not always welcome. Especially by the management with lack of self-confidence who are not seated and have ego problems. But great leaders love to work with intrapreneurs. These type of employees have different needs and expectations than others from the employer. They need to have defined goals, things to turn around, implement new things or to create new business units and always a logical purpose. They are solution oriented and like to work in teams with solution oriented colleagues and where they can see progress by milestone achievements. They don’t only need just an appreciation and nice words. The successful project implementation and authentic appreciation is essential to keep them motivated. The most important motivation tool is giving them enough room for entrepreneurship and enough resources. They always need new challenges as this is their nutriment. Otherwise they will not be alive. If the company can ensure this work environment the intrapreneurs can be loyal and stay with the employer. Otherwise these talents will be valued somewhere else.
